Who is Yamandú Orsi, the newly elected president of Uruguay? | Who Is News

Yamandú Orsi, a left-wing politician, is set to become Uruguay’s next president after his main rival conceded defeat in a closely fought runoff election. His victory brings a centre-left government back to the presidency following five years of conservative leadership.

A former history teacher, folk dancer, and two-time mayor, the 57-year-old Orsi is widely regarded as the political heir of José Mujica, Uruguay’s former president and ex-guerrilla leader. Mujica, who supported Orsi throughout his campaign, praised him as “a new leader capable of balancing the complex dynamics of social, political, and economic life.”

A rural beginning

Born on 13 June 1967 in rural Canelones, Orsi grew up in modest circumstances. His father was a vineyard farmer, and his mother worked as a seamstress. His sister taught him to read and write during his childhood in the countryside.

Orsi’s early political awareness was shaped during Uruguay’s military dictatorship (1973–1983). Following the regime’s collapse, he joined the Popular Participation Movement led by Mujica, who would later serve as president from 2010 to 2015.

Orsi shares many traits with his political mentor, including a love for rural life and a preference for simplicity. He has often been pictured during the campaign drinking mate, walking his dog, and wearing casual attire. Like Mujica, Orsi has announced he will forgo living in the presidential residence when he takes office in March 2025.

Festive offer

A vision for a renewed left

During his campaign, Orsi emphasised a commitment to environmental policies, support for small-scale producers, and advancing social inclusion. He has promised to lead a “renewed left” by fostering dialogue across the political spectrum while avoiding drastic changes in the country of 3.5 million people.

Although a staunch advocate for social welfare, Orsi has also adopted a pragmatic tone toward market policies and private sector engagement. This approach reflects his aim to balance economic growth with social progress.

With his presidency, Orsi seeks to unite the nation and continue Uruguay’s tradition of stable governance.
