Thanjavur, Kumbakonam and Karur Corporations expanded with merger of urbanised pockets on their periphery

The limits of Thanjavur, Karur, and Kumbakonam Corporations have been provisionally expanded by merging the neighbouring urbanised villages.

A Government Order to the effect was passed by the Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department on Tuesday. The decision was based on the detailed surveys conducted by the respective urban local bodies and the Department of Rural Development.

As per the order, 14 panchayats around the Thanjavur Corporation have been merged with it. They were witnessing rapid urbanisation since the completion of delimitation in 2011. Thulukkampatti, Koothanchery and Inathukanpatti of Inathukanpatti panchayat, Kadagadappai, Palliaagraharam of Manakarambai panchayat, Anandam Nagar, Erukkampallam, Goutham Nagar, Gnanam Nagar, Kattuthottam, Ponnusamy and Anisha Nagar, Sundaram and Meenakshi Nagar, Kadavarayavankulam, Marungai, Meenakshi and Arul Nagar, Mariammankoil, Punnainallur and Moopanar Street of Mariammankoil panchayat have been brought under the purview of Thanjavur Corporation.

Similarly, all hamlets of Melaveli, Nilagiri, Pillaiyarpatti, Pudupattinam, Ramanathapuram and Vilar panchayats were also merged. Part of Nanjikottai, Alangudi, Pulavarnatham and Sundarinatham were merged with the Thanjavur Corporation.

Karur Corporation

All hamlets of Andankoil East and Ezhur panchayats have been merged with Karur Corporation. A number of textile and other industrial units have been functioning in both the panchayats.

The population growth and the factors of urbanisation were said to have been parallel with the Karur city. With the merger of the two panchayats, the area of the Karur Corporation will go up to 72.52 square kilo meter. The revenue of the Corporation will also go up correspondingly.

The limits of the Kumbakonam Corporation will go up with the addition of 12 neighbouring panchayats. All hamlets of Annalagraharam, Pazhavathankattalai, Pandaravadaiperumandi, Sokkottai and Ullur were merged with the Corporation. Similarly, parts of Asur, Baburajapuram, Erakaram, Koranattukaruppur, Umamaheswarapuram, Valayapatti, and Thepperumanallur will become part of the Kumbakonam Corporation.

Officials said that anyone, who had objections or reservation over the provisional merger, can submit their representations to the Principal Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply, Chennai, within six weeks from the notification of the Government Order in the State Government Gazette. Genuine grievances would be entertained.
