Soon, you will be able to cross Yamuna by using a cable car. In a significant move, Lieutenant Governor (L-G) Vinai Kumar Saxena has directed the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) to start surveying the Yamuna floodplains for the installation of the ropeway that will carry passengers across Yamuna in cable cars. The survey report has to be submitted within a month.

DDA, which owns the floodplains, will select the sites for the installations within walking distance of metro stations on the banks of the river. The agency claims it will be done “without encroachment or concretisation of the floodplain”. A senior official said that this will be in areas with lesser connectivity.

Once operational, the cable cars will operate  from morning to night during fixed timings. Each cable car will have the capacity to carry about 50 passengers.

The project is aimed at ensuring that people can take an alternate, non-polluting mode of transport across the river, as per officials. The move is also expected to reduce the traffic on key stretches nearby.

The installation is also

expected to provide additional routes closer to the place of residence or work to locals so that they can avoid long circuitous routes.
